Black Eyed Peas
venue: Camden Jazz Café, London
date: 2003-09-25
Black Eyed Peas (BEP), a Los Angeles based wrecking crew are out on a tour for their new LP "Elephunk". The guys have capitalised on there knack for having the skills to write killer tunes and brought their songs to the forefront of the hip hop market. Definately one of the hottest acts around at the moment and have been for years before, BEP are here to stamp a mark in your record collection with the new album and make you wanna bop your head back and forth with a live show to knock you off your feet!

London's Jazz Café in Camden is not your typical joint to play for a group holding the number one postion on the chart but that works to your advantage when you are the Black Eyed Peas. The two levels, two bars and intimate sized venue created a wicked set up for the night. They could have been in a much larger venue but it was great to see they weren't taking advantage of a situation which most would in this day and age. Working the crowd is what they do best and if your a fan of the group you would already know what i'm about to tell you all.... BEP ROCK! Backed by a full band, the guys rocked the stage like a blaze of glory. With a new entry to the group this time round (that would be Fergie) all the same old antics are there with the bonus of more harmonies and adding even further depth to the soul, funk and latin sound. The stage has the appearance of a "rap battle" stage smeared with love.
Its just the way they come across, dudes rapping about waiting for the weekend to come and finding where the love is.Full of energy, they ripped through what it would seem like to fans as a greatest hits collection, although to the new comers it would sound like they had been writing an album called " Elephunk" plus a list of B-sides that were written to blow away you away. Those B-sides ya'll heard on the night were written for a reason, they make up the two previous albums made before you heard that song!

Will-I-Am, Apl-de-Ap, Taboo and Fergie were on fire tonight, one of the three dates announced. Being able to incorporate all their influences into their sound is an amazing thing to watch. BEP come out with an unbridled energy and acrobatic flair that sets them appart from the crowd leaving us in ore of them charging through tunes like Weekends, Joints and Jams, Request Line and newies like Let's Get Retarded and Shut Up. Even the drummer did more than be the backbeat for the night when he hit the stage first after the encore for a blast of rhymes on the mic while sitting behind his kit. The night went down a treat. Having high expectations can pay of after all... Sweet job BEP!!!
