Metric
venue: Debaser, Stockholm
date: 2004-04-03
It has become apparent that one of the key venues to play in Stockholm (for those of you abroad, one very beautiful city!) lies in its heart, down by the water - the rock savvy Debaser. This lucky evening it belongs to the toronto/new york based Metric. Who are Metric? you might ask yourself. Well, they are your newest addition to the cd wish list. I kid you not.

Tonight seems to have a special vibe filtering the smoke hazed venue. Excitement, anticipation, intimidation, maybe a little inebriation: Not quite sure but it seems to be bouncing wall to wall. Stereoscent is greeted with a warm welcome and to the lo-fi, alternative, sounds of experimentalists Califone. Their percussionist, a striking look alike to (Lord of the Rings) director Peter Jackson bashes on his various components to give even more depth to this multi layered 4 piece. Singer Tim Rutili, formerly of Red Red Meat, lets loose his vocals sat behind a keyboard and guitar on his lap. The band are different in a pleasing way.
After a short interval, the formerly instrument cluttered stage soon turned into a frenzied indie/pop extravaganza! Metric hit the stage with all guns blazing! (Did I see a tray of shots heading backstage earlier on???) An amazing amount of energy poured off the stage being lapped up by the fans down front. The sing along choruses to "Succexy" and "Combat Baby" we're having all the crowd participation you could ask for. With a touch of synth from time to time Metric blistered their way through a set compiled mostly of tunes from the latest recorded effort "Old World Underground, Where Are You Now?" (Out on Everloving). It was a treat to have witnessed such interaction between band members who were smiling and all so enthusiastic on stage, the audience also. One young lass who was obviously feeling this too helped herself to James's guitar mid way through a song, giving it a strum or two. Charismatically, Emily kept the audience on their toes. Bubbling immensely with good vibrations that seemed to have taken over her soul this evening and sharing them with everyone around her. As is required of any fun, entertaining front personality.

There is nothing more satisfying than hitting a gig and being blown away after one tune. In this case, it was exactly that. The more-ish texture of each song and delicious choruses just left you aching for more. Now do you see why you need to add Metric to your cd wish list. It's the only way to get more of where all that came from.
