Danko Jones
venue: Mejeriet, Lund
date: 2004-04-08
Lund is almost Danko Jones' hometown since their record label Bad Taste Records is situated here, which means that they have played often in the area during the last years. A lot of people have already seen them and don't bother this time, which might be an explanation to why the audience looks a bit different than I expected – more teenage skaters and beer guzzling guys with leather vests. When the supporting act, Canadian punk rockers Chixxdiggit, has finished (at last!) - Danko Jones enter the stage. Mr. Jones, who seems polite and a bit shy in interviews, now turns into a raving sex maniac. His right environment is clearly the stage where he can get an outlet for his enormous urge for self-assertion. This makes the concert great at times, like when he asks the audience ”What’s my name?!” (for the fifth time or so), and howls ”My name is Danko Jones – and my mama raised a devil child!!”.

Their testosterone gushing muscle rock is perfect for concerts. As they are so tight and try as hard as they can to sweat blood it is bound to be an intense show. In some songs it works so well, like in ”Cadillac”, ”Strut” and ”Lover Call”. The lyrics are often not too complicated; they generally tell us that Danko is one hard rocking horny bastard. Cool sometimes but too Neanderthal in the long run. The parts where Danko sort of preaches, to a bass and drum groove, helps to lift the concert to a higher level. He claims he says a verse hundred times a day: ”This heart gets stronger, this skin gets thicker, this mouth gets louder.” I believe him; it is evident in the music. That’s good sometimes - but not all of the time. Of all the artists he mentions that he looks up to – Joey Ramone, Otis Redding, Bon Scott, Bob Marley, Johnny Cash, Barry White, Randy Rhoads, Marvin Gaye and so on, you can only hear the influence of the former AC/DC singer Bon Scott in his music. But Danko Jones is even more macho, which makes some songs too one-track minded idle running heavy metal.
