Fiery Furnaces
venue: Accelerator The Big One, Malmö, Folkets Park
date: 2004-07-06
Fiery Furnaces were for me, who hadn’t heard them before, this festival’s most pleasant surprise. The four young Americans play a driving mix of new wave and blues-rock with some streaks of organ that sounds like Air’s Virgin Suicides soundtrack. Patti Smith is definitely a role model for the lead singer/guitarist who looks like her minus thirty-five years. The natural focus on the stage though, and the most lit person, is the drummer, who stands out in an ingenious way from the art school look the rest of the band has. Sweaty and happy he beats the drums manically looking as he constantly is on the verge of climax. He and the other members in Fiery Furnaces manage to win the audience in which I believe there are quite a few who hear them for the first time. The sympathetic small size of the Accelerator festival make it possible for the bands to watch the other bands’ shows, so I can see that members of Von Bondies and Franz Ferdinand likes this too.
