Detroit based Von Bondies’ garage rock’n’roll should be perfect live, but today it doesn’t quite work. Their first record, Jack White-produced Lack of Communication has a load of extremely rocking tracks and when they played in Lund last year on the tour for that album they were definitely not a disappointment. Today the daylight on the outdoor stage work against them and makes them look prosaic and gloomy – they should play in a club. They also look unengaged and you would want especially the lead singer/guitarist Jason Stollsteimer to be a more charismatic person. Generally their great songs don’t get the great performance they deserve – there is a tendency that everything blends together. But some songs, especially when Marcie Bolen helps with the singing (e.g. “No sugar mama and “Please please man”) still sound like the simple masterpieces they are.
