Even though Sweden’s biggest metal band has played for over fifteen years they still manage to attract new fans – many in the audience were almost still in their diapers when Entombed formed in the late eighties under the name Nihilist. During their career from the debut album Left Hand Path in 1990 to last years Inferno they have evolved and broken new ground by moving freely through different genres and not getting stuck in conventions. The early years death metal gave way to influences from hardcore punk and classic hard rock, which gave us the fantastic and innovative Wolverine Blues album in 1993 – arguably the peak of their career. There they manage to make a perfect mix of the brutality of death metal combined with influences from bands such as Stooges, Black Sabbath, Black Flag and Corrosion of Conformity. On To Ride, Shoot Straight and Speak the Truth from 1997 the traditional metal influences was even stronger and high-powered songs combined with a feeling of a b-horror movie made the album both hard rocking and humoristic in a way that you hear too seldom in the metal genre. Around that time they unfortunately lost an important part of the band when the eclectic Nicke Andersson left for playing with his Hellacopters (and later on The Solution etc). Apart from being a great drummer, he was one of the founders of Entombed and the main songwriter. During the last years they have not managed to uphold the standard and inventive drive they had during their golden days in the nineties.
After being on tour for some time in Europe this is their first show in Sweden. It may be due to industrious touring that they do not seem quite as fit as one would like. But that does not change the fact that one of their main assets as a live band, L.G. Petrov, is a perfect central figure and singer. With grimacing, thin long hair, and sometimes Ozzy Osbourne-like staggering he has the appearance of a friendly monster, which contrast nicely with the brutal singing. His unpretentious contact with the audience – asking for light for his cigarette and so on – is pretty humoristic and makes the atmosphere somewhat surprisingly quite cosy. I miss some of their best songs like ”Like this with the devil” and ”Lights out” but with the classic stuff like ”Wolverine blues” and ”Hollowman” they can’t go too wrong. Even though the gig sometimes feels like routine Entombed is a professional metal machine that has so much experience and good material to play that their show still is convincing
